My classroom library is a place where students can browse, make selections with ease, and consume large amounts of great books! My classroom library is primarily composed of donations, used books, and literature I've purchased many books in my career. This summer I read several professional books (All About the Books, The Book Scavenger, and Lucy Caulkins Units of Study.) This reading identified where my selections were lacking in regards to books that send positive messages, promote the practice of reading strategies, and engage readers. I am excited for the opportunity to make a larger, more meaningful contribution to my classroom library. We will read Tiger Rising together as a way to show students how writers include small details that make profound impacts on a character's existence. We will read a variety of nonfiction books that adequately demonstrate how real nonfiction reading takes place and how we navigate such reading. In addition, books that send a message about life can allow kids to learn through a real character's experience, thus helping them with critical thinking skills and supportive decision making.
