Despite knowing how important it is for diversity to be represented in our day-to-day lives, many children’s books are still littered with white and male protagonists. (Research suggests that over 80% of characters in children’s books are white). Books aren’t just about “others”. When we see people like ourselves in media, including fiction, we get a glimpse of who we might become, and we feel validated. I have done extensive research to find novels that give students the ability to relate to the struggles faced during the time period and offer diverse characters in which they can see themselves. It is my hope that my students will be able to gain role models and inspiration through the literature.
