In our English classroom, my students and I dive into social justice units that help us critically examine ourselves, communities, and the world around us. By having access to culturally relevant literature in our classroom library, students will be able to dive into stories about their identities as well as identities that differ from their own. It is important that my students read about the experiences of people of color by authors of color. Representation is highly important for my students to feel seen and heard in our classroom. Furthermore, my students will be able to empathize with others by reading about their lived experiences as well as deepen their understanding of the world around us.
