These magnetic chips and wands will be an exciting way for students to improve their reading and writing skills. Students will explore the sounds that make up​ words and enrich their understanding of phonics as they use these to build and write those words. Students will be kept engaged as they use these to practice what they learn in reading instruction. Students will then practice their magical powers as they wisp the chips away from their boards after each word. These chips will specifically be used with Elkonin boxes as students stretch out words and then practice putting those sounds down on paper. This is a skill that has to be mastered in order for students to be good readers. First, students will stretch out the word with their fingers. Next, they will put down one chip for each sound they hear. Then, they will write the corresponding letter/s associated with each sound. Last, they will use the magnetic wand to sweep up the chips and get ready for the next word. Essentially, this will help students improve both their phonemic awareness, phonics, and writing skills in a fun way.
