The digital scales will be used in the classroom to measure salt, baking soda, active yeast, borax, and sugar, for example. Specific amounts of these materials will be used to observe chemical reactions. Students will begin to understand the physical properties of substances, as well as study the concept of conservation of mass during a chemical reaction. Students will use several skills, including working collaboratively, becoming familiar with units, and gaining an appreciation for the precision necessary in a chemistry lab. Students will soon recognize the difference between 2.0 grams, 20 grams, or 200 grams. Students love the engaging, hands on learning associated with lab activities.
