The books selected here have the potential to challenge, inspire, and transform my student's perception of their world. Several of the books, namely The Alchemist, Return to Sender, and I am Malala, will be used for a rotating book club for my 87 8th grade students throughout the year for independent reading. These books, and the rest of the selections, will help students develop their critical analysis about the world from angles they never knew existed.
My students are incredibly bright and intrinsically motivated; they are hungry to learn about the world they live in. Who am I in the world? Where do I see myself now and in the future? These questions ground our daily instruction in developing a self-awareness that is imperative for students growing up in the 21st century. My students have already proved that there is no upper-limit to their brilliance. With the support of new and exciting literature to consume, they will continue to prepare to be the future leaders of the world.
