In the traditional American school system, students of color are bombarded with literature that represents one specific background and experience. These students come to school and are not used to seeing themselves being represented in the books that they are reading. This project is presented in order to counteract this, and give students reading materials that better represent their families, their traditions, their languages, and their cultural backgrounds. When students relate to and feel a connection with what they are reading, deeper engagement is fostered and deeper connections are made. With this being said, the list of books that I compiled here is intended to bring my students' unique cultural backgrounds into the classroom to begin to create a classroom community where students feel that they are being valued, and where students can feel comfortable to explore books and take risks.
