In my classroom, I currently have a chalk board that is covered with a shower board. It is actually the same chalkboard that was in the room when I was a student in this classroom 35 years ago. Yikes! When trying to erase my shower board I have to use a kitchen cleaner to get the ink off. It will not completely erase and it leaves a black film all over the board. Magnets will not work through the shower board and this is an issue due to the fact that we received a new phonics program this year to get our students reading at grade level. Using magnetic letters and having students manipulate them during whole class instruction is crucial in them succeeding and being able to see, hear, and say all the sounds in a word. The students and I will also be able to write sentences on a larger board and not have to strain to see the writing because of how small we currently have to write now. Half of my class attends Title I reading because when they entered first grade they were already behind in their phonics and decoding skills. Having a large magnetic whiteboard will enable our class to see me teaching and allow them to participate in the building of words. By donating to this project, you will increase student achievement and focus, enabling them to achieve more skills in their academics. Thank you!!!
