In my experience, students are the best, most creative innovators of the arts in technology. While I am blessed to live in a state that provides technology to our students, our schools recently chose to move to laptops rather than tablet technology. I had recently created an engaging technology unit in which students had profound success in creating art about themselves and around them. Photo manipulation, animation and digital creation are wonderful ways for middle school students to profoundly express themselves. Sadly, the technology for this kind of creation is not as available on laptop technology and the kinds that are (i.e. photoshop) are far too expensive for a small rural district in South Western Maine. iOS technology offers free, superbly created and easily manipulated apps for students to access the kinds of creative technologies that will boost them in 21st century learning.
