While we give our students the opportunities to move their bodies throughout the day (as we change activities, enter/leave the classroom, turn in work, etc.), when we are asking students to do their best concentration, we are asking them to sit in their seats. Now, what if that seat is not the best option for success? That is why we would like to adapt our classroom to become flexible and provide alternative options from a standard desk and chair. With a group of diverse learners, with different needs, successes and challenges, it can be difficult to find a system that works for everyone. So, we as a class brainstormed what type of seats would help ensure the most success. My students came up with the list that we are asking for your help in funding. They also came up with a place to put their materials since they will no longer be using the inside of their desks. My students are exhilarated by having a new type of classroom environment where they can pick their seat based on what they need at that time of the day. This will essentially create a student-centered learning environment where students learn their own successes with seating. Students will choose from standing desks, wiggle stools, lap desks, stability balls, and various chairs. They will choose the tool that will create the best learning environment of them. With this power of choice, student engagement will increase and behaviors will decrease. During whole-group instruction, students will sit on the carpet, but during independent or group work time, they will choose their workspace. Not only will the ability to make a choice be motivating for students, the seating options themselves will promote better focus and student engagement.
