Our rooftop terrace will be designed, planted, and maintained by a group of middle school students. These students will plant a raised garden planters on the school ground. The garden will a the focal point to enhance interest in math, science, and, environmental studies. During the academic year, these students will use some existing materials along with our needed supplies to grow and foster seasonal vegetation. The project will enable students to actively engage in the life-cycle of plants through raising seeds from germination through flowering. Students will also be able to compare perennial plants with plants that survive all seasons with the inclusion of evergreen shrubs. Additionally, students will learn about the needs of plants through close observation and care by meeting the requirements prescribed for individual plants in terms of sunlight and watering the class watering cans. The plants will also serve as a hands-on connection for discussion of environmental issues around the globe.
