Access to a variety of sensory materials allows students to take charge of their emotions and helps them learn to self regulate in order to be ready to work and learn. By having a variety of sensory tools available in one place, students can make choices that work best for them. Making sure students are comfortable and regulated is an essential component in motivating them and helping them to be ready to learn. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given the opportunity to self regulate and choose sensory strategies that work for them. Students build tool kits and are able to request or access items that work specifically for them. They almost always make good choices and are more engaged, and are able to get more work completed. My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of how to get themselves ready to learn. The resources that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional self-regulation tool kit options to make more effective choices. The fidgets and chewies will allow students to access and engage in calming activities during large group instruction or small group work, improving attention and engagement. The noise canceling headphones allow students to block out distractions or decrease noises that cause stress and agitation. The light filters decrease the glare of fluorescent lighting and make the classroom a more calm and inviting place to learn, and the weighted vests provide extra input to students who find the chaos of a classroom difficult to manage. I have experienced how choice and access to needed sensory items can positively affect my students' work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us continue to learn.
