My students are policy debaters. They belong to an Urban Debate League. They travel and compete against other students. They train every day and travel to tournaments every weekend. They are mostly poor students of color. My students spend several hours a day researching evidence from periodicals and scholarly articles. They write arguments and practice their oratory skills. Our school is mostly composed of low-income students who have never traveled before or were involved in an academic competition.
