Nonfiction monographs, narratives, and memoirs can help bring a subject to life for my young teenagers in the 9th and 10th grade from a rural area, who have limited life experiences but big hearts and minds that want to grow. I want to open the world up to my students by reading beyond the textbook. Nonfiction feeds their hearts and minds by creating windows to other cultures and various contexts that they didn't know existed. Instead of debating population growth and decline, or the demographic effects of the war on drugs, or the pros and cons of changing immigration policy, students can read a first hand account of a teenager who found himself in the middle of all of these controversies. Instead of just talking about climate change like an abstract concept, students will read about the real effects that climate change has had on vulnerable parts of the world that they never spend time thinking about. Instead of thinking about the map as something that is stagnant, students will read about how those maps have been constructed and contested over time, and what that means for us today.
