In my Dual Credit classroom, I teach my students how to be take on the real world by helping them practice soft skills like collaboration, professionalism, respectful discussion, and continuous self- reflection. I teach these skills alongside culturally diverse and socially relevant texts, evoking empathy through other cultures, beliefs and logic. I use a wide array of current and relevant non-fiction books that are not always available at the library, or in local stores. Giving access to my students who cannot afford to obtain them on their own opens up an understanding of the real world, allows unseen possibilities, and helps them relate in their own lives. Having these books would go a long way towards allowing my students to see themselves in diverse fiction, rather than the typical canon of literature available in our textbooks.
