First grade is bursting with exciting foundational literacy skills. It is truly an amazing experience to watch the children develop the ability to read. Not only are they learning to read, they are LOVING to read. That love of reading progresses throughout the year until finally students are reading to learn and for enjoyment. It is an amazing to watch so much growth happen in first grade. Many of my students come from low socioeconomic conditions and do not have books in their home or access to books at the local public library. My classroom is the only place they have open access to books.
