The socioeconomic status of our students varies, but right now many families are struggling. The unemployment rate in Oregon is even higher than the national rate, so we've got many kids whose parents can't even afford to buy them school supplies, much less camera equipment for a class. These kids are so eager to learn. They love to write, which is usually why they sign up for Journalism, but through the class they come to love other aspects of Journalism, like photography. They become experts at taking pictures and recognizing quality photography. Some of my students go on to study Photography or Journalism in college, but even those who don't usually use writing and photography in some part of their lives.
