When I was 14 or 15, I was taken by my mom to see a theatrical production of "To Kill a Mockingbird." It completely changed my life. I devoured Harper Lee's words and imagined myself as a young Scout afraid of Boo Radley. I became obsessed with the Civil Rights Movement. I want to right all of the injustices in the world. It is one of the reasons I became a teacher. Research shows that the best way to increase vocabulary is to READ!!! English Language Learners have a working conversational vocabulary that won't help them pass the SAT; Socioeconomically disadvantaged students have never been to Holocaust Museums nor to theatrical productions of great literature. Please help my students connect with good literature by providing class sets of two of the worlds most iconic works of fiction: Anne Frank: A Diary of a Young Girl and To Kill a Mockingbird.
