I want my scholars to not only escape into the fantasy world of dystopian novels, but also to explore immigration through first-hand accounts, develop a new way of thinking about the Civil Rights Movement through graphic novels, and validate their teenage experience through modern love stories. That's why I am asking for new books to update my classroom library! These materials will help my students fall in love with the transformative power of books, as books can take us to places and people that are often limited by our classroom walls. My students come from diverse backgrounds in an urban environment, and deserve to immerse themselves in literature written by people like them, with stories that connect to them.
