Too many people think that inner-city public schools are filled with "those" kids... troublesome students with poor test scores. It's a shame that not everyone has the privilege of working a job like mine, in a school like mine, and with kids like mine because if given that chance, they would certainly shake their cynicism. If an inner-city public school is teeming with anything, then it teems with unshakable talent, resilience, and perseverance. I refer to my students as "my kids." Despite the various challenges my kids face within the learning and home environment, they show up with their game faces on and are eager to learn. Together, we create a culture of learning in which reading becomes interesting and writing seems a little less scary.
