My students struggle with reading comprehension. They require a research based, direct instruction program like Making Connections, that explicitly teaches them key ideas and content. My students normally master all of their IEP goals except the reading comprehension goals. I have seen a pattern where we continue to work on the same comprehension goals year after year. Sadly, our school district provides research based direct instruction programs for math and basic reading, but not for reading comprehension. Each year my students feel defeated and disappointed when they don't pass the End of the Year test in reading comprehension. I want to provide them with the best program to help them meet their learning goals. I want them to feel like the other students in their class. I want them to capture their dreams.
