I have a lower socioeconomic group of students, and most have not been to the public library or come to school with books to read when asked. We are a very multicultural class with many students that have English as their second language. We recently read James and the Giant Peach, and it was the most motivated I have ever seen my students. Textbooks and anthologies are not keeping students interested in reading, but creative and well written novels really make them excited for Language Arts!
