I teach a first/second grade class of 24 students in an urban school district in a high-needs community. My school is very diverse by cultures, races, and English language learners. The low socioeconomic status of 85% of our school's students and the grim budget cuts have made the learning environment at our school even more limited. The biggest obstacle for my students is the violence that they witness in their community outside of the school day. However,in our classroom, the students are safe, interactive, and full of opportunities to grow.
