It is difficult finding books that meet all student needs including their skill level and language development. It is also a challenge building a classroom library with titles and pictures that represent the diversity we have in the room. It is so important for students to feel connected to text. This personal relationship allows them to make real life connections, become emotionally invested in reading, and to feel like our classroom is an extension of home. The books I have chosen would all meet a need. ABC books would help strengthen phonics skills. Sight words books would help students practice words they are learning throughout the year in context. Books explicitly teaching how to handle emotions would help all students with life long skills they need to succeed in the classroom and in life. Lastly, books representing multiple cultures and specifically showing photos of students that look like themselves would help students feel represented and included. My sweet students I will be teaching this year do not have easy access to literature, opportunities to get to a public library, or experiences in practicing academic English vocabulary. By providing financial aid, you are helping get books into children's hands that keep them engaged and feeling successful. You are also greatly supporting my efforts in creating an environment where we all share a love of learning as a classroom family.
