Flexible seating allows my students to consider what will help them in a physical way to learn best. Providing them with different options allows them to own their learning. A 75 minute class period for any student can feel like forever, let along a middle school student with Autism. Simple motions such as bouncing up and down on a balance ball chair or rocking on a stool can help meet their sensory needs as they are learning new material. The population of students at our school learn best when their environment is optimal. This means that comfortable seating does more than facilitate learning, it makes the learning possible.
