Being able to critically read and discuss ideas are crucial for students to be successful. Unfortunately, most of the text available for students (especially novels) are outdated and written from a perspective the students do not share or care about. The Poet X will give my students a current and relatable text to help to not only ensure their engagement, but to help improve their reading skills. I want to use Poet X because it is a voice that is not heard in any of the curriculum. I believe it is crucial to hear a variety of perspectives, and being that my over 75% of my students are hispanic, this novel will "hit home." Having a narrator with a similar background, similar family, and similar issues is a teacher's dream for engagement. With most students below grade level, the engagement and curiosity will consequently improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills.
