Books are mirrors to see ourselves and windows to see into the lives, thoughts and feelings of others. Not only do I want to make sure my students see themselves in various books, but I also want to focus on showing empathy. Empathy defined is: the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Empathy is the goal. I have selected a wide range of diverse books to add to our classroom library that my students can not only use these books as mirrors to see themselves, but they can also use many of these books as windows to see into someone else's life. It is my hope that my students will be able to use the donated books as both, mirrors and windows, and become not only life long readers but empathetic citizens of our country.
