80% percent of the students in my school receive free or reduced lunch, meaning they are from low income homes. Approximately the same percentage are African American and Hispanic minorities. Our school is quite small - totaling about 180 students k-12 - but we have shown ourselves worthy on the state tests until recently. For about ten years, enrollment has been declining. Then in 2007, we were hit by two F3 tornadoes which devastated 80% of the industrial and business districts. Then, the recession hit and two of our major factories closed down, and we lost even more students, and now our test scores are dropping.
