Flexible seating allows students to engage in their learning and make comfortable choices that suit their learning style. During Independent Reading and Writing, the students choose a spot in our room that works best for them. Currently, my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, sitting under tables with clip boards, or sitting or laying on the floor with a clip board. I have noticed more student engagement when I give them the option to sit where they choose, yet I have also noticed that the comfort level could be better for them. When students are comfortable and at ease, learning is better able to take place. I believe that students feel empowered when having a degree of choice in their environment. Outside of choice and comfort, flexible seating also opens the door to peer collaboration and meaningful discussion! Traditional desks in rows isolates students from one another, leaving out a crucial part of the educational experience. The products that I have selected for my project will help give my students additional seating options, while maximizing group activities, comfort and focus. I have seen how collaboration, comfort and choice can enhance a child's learning, as well as providing an environment that kids enjoy being a part of.
