In my Art 2 classroom we work on Graffiti style paintings focusing on color theory. Students use the Primary Colors as well as black and white to mix all other colors. They begin by creating their name in different graffiti styles on www.graffiticreator.net where students can customize their names in graffiti on the computer. They then use these print outs to help them when starting their paintings. My middle school students are very interested in graffiti and as well as creating it. This project teaches them color theory in a way that is interesting to them. We use acyrlic paints because their colors are very vibrant and can dry quickly, however, this can be a problem as well if students get the paint on their school uniforms. The paint does not easily come out of clothes. My students need aprons to help keep their school uniforms clean. Most of my students come from low-income homes and cannot afford to buy new clothes frequently so keeping their clothes free from paint is a must!
