Research shows that when students are given the opportunity to choose the books they would like to read, their reading level and overall academic performance increases faster than it does with direct instruction. In my English Language Development class, all students begin class with 10 minutes of independent reading every day. However, my beginning students generally have to choose from picture books because they haven't learned enough vocabulary yet to comprehend a chapter book. Saddleback Educational Publishing produces high interest, low level novels for high school students. This set includes a variety of engaging books for my beginning English Learners, which will allow them to read chapter books that they can easily understand. This will not only help build confidence and classroom community, but will also lead to more academic success.
