When evaluating the music department, we pondered, "what can we do differently?" and "What can we do to improve?" By diversifying our course offerings, we hope to give more students the chance to make music. How do we reach the students who aren't interested in band or chorus? How do we get more students into the music department? Our solution: provide more music-making opportunities outside of our large ensembles. By integrating ukuleles into our music curriculum, we give students music education that can be used for a lifetime. Ukuleles are relatively inexpensive instruments, but they can also open the door for creativity, self-discipline, and a greater appreciation for music and music performance. If this project becomes fully funded, I would love to open it up again to have enough ukuleles to create a full class set. We'll start with ten... baby steps!
