The students do calculations every day in physics using real-world numbers such as times off of a stop watch or distances between planets. A good number of my students cannot afford a calculator in order to do these. They also use them to follow along with me during sample problems and on tests. The biggest struggle is during testing: if the student does not have access to a calculator, the test becomes much more difficult or would take them much longer to finish. Even after borrowing calculators from other teachers, I have had to have students share calculators during tests. This is difficult as I have to make sure that it is cleared out every time that is is passed between the students. These calculators would give every student a more equal opportunity to be successful.
