We live in important and changing times. As I teach my students to be academic learners, I am also helping them become compassionate and productive citizens. I am impressed by the empathy my students already show, and I want to capitalize on that by providing them with more examples of diversity. The students at my school are wonderful at accepting each other for who they are. There is not a large amount of ethnic diversity in our school, so I want to provide my students with exposure to other races and cultures through literature so they can learn and take that accepting spirit with them into the world. It is also important for students to connect to themselves and learn how to navigate the world through experiences similar to theirs. I also included some books that will help students navigate tough situations with stories both familiar and different. I plan to use these books in a few ways. They will be available in my classroom library for students to read on their own. I also plan to use some with character building morals to teach character lessons whole class. I would love to also some as read aloud books and then integrate them with art projects.
