One of my most important classroom objectives is to provide my students with opportunities to play and have healthy interactions with their classmates. Many of my students have stressful home lives, which can impede their ability to just be kids and play. Once a week we schedule time as a class to build community within our learning environment. Out of all the ways we have tried, kids playing games together yields the most joy, positive interactions, and students engaging with peers they wouldn't normally. Interaction through the use of board games allows kids to engage with one another, laugh and play without being glued to a computer screen or piece of technology. In a digital world where so much peer socializing is done via computer, cell phone, or tablet, teaching kids communication and socialization skills through the use of board games has been incredible successful.
