We think about classrooms as a place to learn reading, math, writing, science, social studies, engineering and art. But before any learning can take place, the classroom itself needs to be accessible, inviting and feel safe. Students need to feel welcomed, and teachers do that through creating a student-centered environment. In my class, we build our community by coming together on the carpet multiple times a day for many reasons. In the mornings, we greet each other; during academics, students get the first glimpse of the days learning target; after lunch, we unwind with a read aloud; in the afternoon, we share our favorite part of the day. The carpet is our "home base", and ours is too small for every student to sit comfortably. We need a carpet big enough for every student to join together. Not only is this carpet big enough, but the sections in the design make it so each student has their own space, allowing them to focus on learning, not whether there is room for them.
