Reading takes an active role in a third graders learning experience. Reading different types of text, especially non-fiction, can really grab a child's attention. But, reading non-fiction doesn't have to come in the form of a book! Magazines are a great resource for getting students to fall in love with reading non-fiction. The Scholastic News magazine does exactly this using current events.
Scholastic News explores topics and events that are currently happening. The topics are also relevant and easy for a third grader to relate to in the form of a magazine. While the students are reading this non-fiction magazine text, they also gain a deeper understanding of the text when they use the text features. The magazine engages the readers by including colorful photographs, maps, and graphs. The magazine also provides comprehension questions to measure students' understandings.
Along with a subscription to the magazine, each child will also be able to access the magazine on-line. The features of the on-line version include it being read to them in either English or Spanish, vocabulary enrichment, and other activities. This allows for all learners to take an active role learning from the magazine.
