My students come to me after already being pushed out of their regular high school for low credits or poor attendance. They come from low income families that may have marginal housing. They have no books in their homes and few supplies that will help them be good students. When I ask them if they have ever read a book, the answer is "No, I hate reading". After one semester in our reading program, one boy, who is a teenage father, said, "I love reading. I just wanted to tell you that it is because of you." This young man also brings books home for his one year old daughter. She is now enjoying books about frogs and birds. As her dad gets more interested in reading, he can pass this love on to his daughter who will then grow up to be a student who is curious about the world and ready to learn.
