Digital tools give kids in special education unparalleled access to learning materials. Kids with dyslexia can use text-to-speech, kids with dysgraphia can type. Kids who need repeated exposures to the same material can do so in more reliable ways. Kids with speech difficulties can use communication boards. But it only works when they can learn to use these tools. In third and fourth grades students are first exposed to use tools like text-to-speech and voice-dictation. I use these tools as part of my teaching strategy. When kids see me using the tools they learn to use them. Accessibility tools are vital to SpEd students because they provide Independence and bolster self-confidence. Developing self-confidence in their ability learn is key to their success. My goal is to make these tools a natural part of their skill-set so they can explore the world with confidence and independence.
