One of the skills students build in preschool are fine motor skills, or use of the hands. Fine motor abilities allow students to have increased independence both in the classroom and at home. For example, when young children strengthen the small muscles in their hands and fingers. they are able to zip zippers, tie their shoes. and manipulate pencils and crayons in order to write and color. Fine motor skills develop over time because the kinds of delicate movements that enable children to manipulate objects can be learned only over time with a lot of practice. These materials will be used each morning when my students come to the classroom. After completing their morning jobs they get to select a table to "play" at until the school day begins. It would be beneficial to have multiple fine motor activities available for them at this time. Magnetic boards, puzzles, letter beads, letter tracing boards, and various activities using tweezers will engage students in play while also building the muscles in their fingers and hands. Because fine motor strength is built over time and with a lot of practice, having these materials available to my students on a daily basis will build the foundation they need for the writing requirements in kindergarten and throughout their entire school experience.
