I want my students to access historical information, that is some times hard to relate to, in an engaging and visual way through picture books. I believe that social studies concepts are crucial for students to grasp and internalize. One of the best ways for them to do this is through books that help them put themselves in a character's shoes, and see the world briefly through their point of view. Not only are the books on this list educational and meeting social studies curriculum standards for fifth grade, but they also include books for integral character development opportunities. Excite readers, integrate social studies!
