The alternative seating will allow students to release some of their pent up energy while still focusing on their class work. The alternative seating that I am seeking for my students are wobble stools, yoga/wobble balls, and wobble cushions to place in regular chairs. These items will get my classroom started in the switch to flexible seating. The students will sit on the stools, balls, or cushions in class and during group work time to help them focus, while still getting to move around a bit. Alternative seating also lends itself nicely to collaborative group work, guided stations, and helps to minimize many negative behaviors that occur during instruction. Students need to work in an environment that makes them feel comfortable. If students are given choices of where to sit, or how to sit it would increase the comfort level of our students and allow for my students to do their best work. Even as adults, large companies such as Google have alternative seating options that allow employees to be comfortable and in turn, do their best.
