My seventh-graders are from one of the poorest neighborhoods in California, where poverty and gang warfare are daily realities. Though the district schools in this neighborhood routinely fail students, my students attend one of the top K-8 charter schools in the city. Families and teachers at our school work incredibly hard to make college a reality for our kids, and our students work even harder. Students come early and stay late, tackling their schoolwork with passion, determination, and grit. They refuse to allow their circumstances to determine their futures, and they are true inspirations.
