I would like to provide my students the opportunity to explore volume, area, and perimeter beyond the traditional two-dimensional methods of using only paper and pencil. I strongly believe that my students will be able to better grasp these challenging mathematical concepts by providing them the opportunity to do so in a hands-on way, by building three-dimensional structures, in which they will be able to visually compare and contrast these 3 concepts. This project will allow my students will to creatively design their own structures and then calculate the perimeter, area, and volume of their structures using PLUS PLUS - Construction Building Toy. It is my goal that through this project, my students will be able to recognize volume as a three-dimensional space, select appropriate strategies and tools for solving problems that involve estimating and calculating perimeter, area, and volume, decompose three-dimensional shapes, and measure necessary attributes of shapes in order to determine volumes to solve real world and mathematical problems.
