Small group instruction is essential to the success of any student in any subject, and when we look at a student's mathematical education there is certainly no exception. All students learn in different ways and at different paces, and with class sizes increasing, the ability to conduct high-quality small group instruction becomes increasingly important. A group of 4-6 students sitting with their teacher opens the door to endless academic possibilities. While my classroom is equipped with fantastic technological resources, it is lacking the basic furniture needed to create a practical and inviting small group work space. I am so fortunate that every student in my classroom has an iPad to use as an educational tool--various programs on the iPad allow for differentiation and ease of delivering academic materials. What I've noticed, however, is that there truly is no substitute for one-on-one or small group instruction on the path to students achieving their full academic potential. Whether a student needs to revisit a topic that he/she didn't quite grasp the first time around, or he/she needs to be pushed to the next level of understanding, there is no better avenue to get students where they need to go than through small group instruction. With the addition of a kidney table and stools to my classroom, I will be able to reach every student on his/her level so that all students are meeting their learning goals!
