My students are eager to learn more about their Black heritage and issues that impact them as Black students. One way to increase cultural awareness and to develop your own identity is through literature. I would like to expose my students to books written by authors of color that cover topics students are affected by. "The Hate U Give," by Angie Thomas is an incredibly important book that can used as a springboard for talking about race relations, law enforcement, and the Black Lives Matter movement. This is an essential piece of literature that every high school student should read.
