Over 90% of my students receive free-and-reduced lunch. Many of the kindergarteners can't tell me their last name. We have a mental health advocacy group in residence because many of our students are suffering from trauma whether from a parent being in prison, being homeless, or from the severe weather that ripped through our city this past spring. A quarter of our population has a special education label, with a high number of Autism Spectrum Disorder students. Yet to us they are all above average because smart is something they are learning, not something to be born with. They are slowly beating the odds, and they love to read!
