My 2nd graders are much like other 7 and 8 year olds around the country. They are curious and sometimes mischievous. They love to play and explore. They do not like to sit in their seats and look at a textbook while their teacher lectures all day. They long to read "real" books on their own. They are at a crucial point. Reading still holds a certain magic in their minds but they are in danger of losing that sense of wonder due to a lack of available material that interests them. Reading opens the mind to new worlds and new possibilities. That is exactly what my students need more of. My students live in the poorest neighborhood in town and attend the poorest school in the district. When asked what they want to be when they grow up one girl answered, "I want to work at Taco Bell". The world they live in offers few choices and even fewer examples of the what opportunities await them if they dare to dream and work hard.
