Flexible, student-centered classroom design can increase engagement, improve motivation, foster community, and create space for collaboration and communication. Allowing students voice and choice in their classroom seating helps them experience health and learning benefits. They are able to focus better and spend more time on task. In my school district, we are moving towards flexible learning environments to support personalized learning. I have been attempting to create flexible environments with traditional furniture and thrift store buys. I currently have many traditional desks and a couple tables; this additional furniture will allow the students to pick a place to sit that work best for them. Some students will want to sit at a high top cafe table on a stool instead of a regular school desk with a partner to collaborate on a project. Other students may want to sit in a comfy bean bag chair to work independently.
