Have you ever wanted to do something but couldn't afford it? In my classroom, students get the opportunity to sew several items; among them are a drawstring backpack, aprons, pillows, and pajama pants. Though these projects are hands-on and engaging, students develop and learn problem-solving skills, patience, confidence, stress-relief, and resourcefulness. Sewing is a basic lifelong skill that allows individuals to save money and debunk gender stereotypes. In order for students to be successful, they need basic classroom supplies. For students at my school, sometimes that isn't an option given their family circumstances. We need your help to get students access to resources such as fabric, to utilize their creativity and to learn basic lifelong skills. Your donation goes towards fabric, cording, and felt. With these supplies, students will get hands-on learning opportunities when we make our backpacks, aprons, pillows, and pajama pants. They will learn skills of this vocational trade such as using a sewing machine, pressing fabric & garments, proper safety and hygiene, using specialty cutting utensils like fabric shears and rotary cutters, fine motor skills in the hands, and fabric construction.
